Meet the Tutor
Hi, I’m Katelin Surgeon. I am a teacher from Kansas City, Mo. I graduated from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. with a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. I am certified by the State of Missouri for Early Childhood Education (B-3), Elementary Education (1-6), and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (K-12). I have nearly 10 years of classroom experience and was a part of the staff of Chapel Hill Elementary, a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School, for eight years before deciding to step back from teaching in the classroom to pursue my passion of working with students one-on-one to meet them where they are at in a tutoring setting.
Philosophy of Teaching
The best learning occurs when clear connections are made between what a child is learning and his or her own background and experiences. These connections help learners remember new content and concepts more readily. As an experienced educator, I am familiar with how state learning standards and curriculum build on concepts from year to year. I am skilled in helping students to access their background knowledge about a variety of topics through the use of questioning and discussion.
Children learn best when a variety of instructional methods are used. Each child is unique, so the instruction of each child should be uniquely crafted to fit his or her needs. Too often, there is no space for this in the general education classroom. As a tutor, I fill this gap by planning learning activities based on each child’s strengths and areas for growth.
Hands-on learning is an essential part of developing understanding, particularly in the areas of math and science where concepts can be very abstract. I make learning in these areas more concrete through the use of both physical and digital manipulatives.
