My Wine Story
Ironically enough, my wine story actually begins with beer — really, really good German beer. You see, in the summer of 2018, my husband and I took a two-week tour around Europe, and one of our stops was in Munich, Germany. While there, we visited the Hofbräuhaus and a beer garden and consumed, well, a fair amount of beer. Ever the lightweight, I was sure I was going to have a nasty headache the next morning until our tour guide informed us that there is something different about German beer — it is made without the preservatives that lead to dehydration and cause that icky feeling the next day.
When we left Munich, my husband and I lamented that we could not get beers made this way in the States. In fact, I found the beer in Germany to be such a better quality than what I could get locally that I went on a bit of a wine kick after we returned home. The problem? One glass of wine (especially if it was a glass of red) was all it took to leave me with a mean headache the following morning and sometimes even within that same evening.
Fast-forward a couple of years, and I was still enduring wine headaches and missing German beer. That’s when I saw something that I never expected to see — my dance-fitness instructor had started selling wine. Let me be clear, this was someone who was very into fitness and extremely conscious of what she put into her body. The fact that she was selling wine was enough on its own to pique my interest. There had to be something different about this wine if she was willing to not just drink it herself but promote it to others.
So what was the difference? This wine, produced by Scout & Cellar, was Clean-Crafted™, free of the preservatives and added sugars and chemicals commonly found in other wines. Could it be that I had found a wine that could replicate the happy experience of German beers? I had to find out!
I ordered by first bottle, a Cabernet Sauvignon, thinking that a red would surely be the ultimate test of whether or not this wine was any different from the rest. From the first sip, my husband and I were both hooked on the taste. This wine actually tasted cleaner than others we’d had before, and it didn’t leave our mouths feeling dry, either. The real kicker, though, was that even after enjoying two delicious glasses, I was headache-free. The next morning, I awoke feeling as though I’d had nothing but water the night before. There really was a difference, and I haven’t turned back since.
What is Clean-Crafted?
Let’s be real, wine should be made from grapes and…well, that’s it. For a wine to be considered Clean-Crafted™, it goes through two rounds of independent lab testing to guarantee that it’s free of yucky stuff like synthetic pesticides, added sugars, and chemical additives and has fewer than 100ppm of total sulfites. Scout & Cellar also evaluates and reviews farming and production practices to confirm that they are, in fact, Clean-Crafted.
